Ethernet is widely utilized Local Area Network
(LAN) technology. Ethernet was first developed by by Xerox Corporation in
cooperation with DEC and Intel in 1976. Ethernet LAN technology basically
implemented with coaxial cables or special grades of twisted pair wires and uses
a bus or star topology that supports data transfer rates (transmission speed) up
to 10 megabits per second. Sometimes Ethernet systems are called 10BASE-T.
Faster Ethernets or 100BASE-T provide data transfer
rates up to 100 Mbps and used to support a number of workstations with 10BASE-T
cards. There is also a Gigabit Ethernet technology that provides much higher
level of data transfer rate (1000 Mbps).
